19 March 2021

The bronze figure is set on a granite pedestal. Herold Belger is sitting on a bench with a book in his hand.

The author is sculptor Nurlan Dalbai. The idea was offered by Yermek Tursunov, a writer, film director, script writer, and Belger’s apprentice. The unveiling ceremony was attended by representatives of the creative community: Secretary of State of the Republic of Kazakhstan Krymbek Kusherbayev, akim (mayor) of Almaty city Bakytzhan Sagintayev, Minister of Culture and Sports Aktoty Raimkulova, figures of culture and art Olzhas Suleimenov, Murat Auezov, Assyly Osman, Akhmetzhan Ashiri, Ruben Andriassyan, Yuri Aravin, Yermek Tursunov, and others.

At the ceremony, the Secretary of State read out the message from President Kassym‑Jomart Tokayev on the occasion of opening the monument to the people's writer.

“Herold Belger, loved and respected by our people as Her-aga, made a great contribution in the flourishing of our national literature and culture, into dynamic development of the Kazakh language. Raised in the spirit of the steppe democracy, the writer always highlighted the most pressing and relevant issues of the spirituality of the nation, discussed them with the society, and proposed ways to solve them. The most important thing is that, during his entire creative life, Herold Belger tirelessly worked for the benefit of the spiritual unity of the Kazakhstan people”, the President said in his message.

The Secretary of State pointed out that Her-aga, brought up in a Kazakh village amidst real friendship and warmheartedness, sincerely cared about, and deeply respected, the language, mentality, culture, and art of the Kazakh people till the end of his life.

“His art has become a real treasury of wisdom that serves as spiritual nourishment for our younger generation. Today, we are paying tribute to this outstanding son of our nation for his relentless work and noble heart, which he devoted to Kazakhstan,” the Secretary of State said.

Krymbek Kusherbayev thanked philanthropist Nurlan Smagulov, sculptor Nurlan Dalbai, and others for their contribution to the creation and opening of the monument. Raissa Khismatullina, Herold Belger’s wife, was greatly impressed by the location chosen for the sculpture.

“It is here that he liked to have a rest in the last years of his life. During his last years, Herold could not get to his favorable bench over there, near the Shokan monument, and had a rest right here. Herold certainly did not dream about any monuments or memorial boards. He was a very modest man,” she said.

Herold Belger was not just a translator, novelist, and journalist, he was a phenomenon of Kazakhstan’s multi-ethnic culture and literature. During the Soviet epoch, when the Kazakh language faded into the background, Belger did a lot to promote Kazakh literature. He collected a library of literary works by Kazakh poets and novelists and translated them into Russian. Herold Belger gave the Russian-speaking readers the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of Beimbet Mailin, Gabit Musrepov, Abish Kekilbayev.

Much time and effort he devoted to studying the works of Abai, a well-known Kazakh poet, philosopher, and educator of the 19th century. In his famous work “Goethe and Abai”, Belger looks for common spiritual features in the portraits of the two men of genius. In 2007, on Belger’s initiative, a collection of Abai’s verses was published in Germany in the German language.
