THE NURLAN SMAGULOV FOUNDATION SENT A RELIEF CONSIGNMENT TO TURKEY

Catastrophic earthquakes followed by powerful aftershocks have caused huge damage to Turkey. And while attempts are being made to roughly estimate the scale of the damage from the natural disaster, friendly countries are actively helping the Turkish people.

Kazakhstanis do not stand aside, and, in addition to official government aid, corporations, businessmen and individuals continue to collect essential supplies for the affected areas. The story of a schoolboy who spent his lunch money to help the victims spread all over the Kazakhstan internet.

Some banking applications have special accounts to raise funds for the victims, and the Association of Turkish and Kazakhstan businessmen also coordinates relief efforts. The funds raised go to the official accounts of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The consulate says that requests for supplies most needed now are received daily.

Director of the Foundation Aydin Sultanov said, “The main idea behind the foundation is to improve the quality of life in Kazakhstan, but Turkey was hit by such an enormous disaster that we could not stand aside. We made a request to the consulate and purchased supplies exactly according to the list. These are things that will allow the affected people to survive, such as gasoline generators, heaters, blankets, sleeping bags…”.

The valuable supplies were handed over to representatives of the Consulate General of the Turkish Republic on February 22.

According to Alper Ekrem Bozkurt, Commercial Attaché of the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey in Almaty, humanitarian aid from Kazakhstanis has been flowing in continuously: “After the tragedy that claimed the lives of more than forty thousand people, each and everyone has been helping us — individuals, large and small firms. The people of Kazakhstan showed a real brotherly attitude. Today, we have received 50 million tenge worth of humanitarian aid from the Nurlan Smagulov Foundation, Astana Motors and MEGA Center Management.

There is a saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed. Kazakhstanis have shown us true friendship in difficult times. Our country will never forget it! Once again, I want to say a huge thank you to all Kazakhstanis!”.
