ASTANA MOTORS DEVELOPS CAR MANUFACTURING IN KAZAKHSTAN AND DOES NOT HAVE PLANS FOR THE RUSSIAN PLANT

Astana Motors is currently planning to deepen the localization processes and build new plants in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The company does not have any plans for the plant in St. Petersburg.

Astana Motors owns a working full-cycle plant, Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan, located in Almaty’s Industrial Zone. It was commissioned in 2020 and now manufactures nine Hyundai models: Tucson, Accent, Sonata, Elantra, Santa Fe, Palisade, Staria, i30, and Bayon.

In 2022, Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan produced 39,000 cars, and it plans to make 50,000 cars in 2023.

In 2022, Astana Motors started building a multi-brand full-cycle plant in Almaty’s Industrial Zone to manufacture Chinese cars: Chery, Haval, and Changan. In 2025, the company will launch a plant with an annual capacity of 90,000 units. Cars will be produced using a complete knock-down method (CKD) with welding and painting.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant in St. Petersburg was a supplier of formed body panels and some other components for the CKD assembly of the Hyundai Accent in Almaty. The Hyundai Accent is a very popular car model in Kazakhstan. We are concerned about the situation at the plant and hope that it is solved in the near future.

Astana Motors is now building a technological cluster in Almaty’s Industrial Zone where Hyundai, Chery, Haval, and Changan as well as Hyundai components will be produced.

In 2022, Astana Motors started manufacturing Staria, i30, and Bayon at Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan, thus extending the existing Hyundai lineup. The company is developing the production in Kazakhstan, deepening the localization of the manufactured cars and planning to expand the production area of Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan plant in Almaty as well as make new Hyundai models in 2023.
