No Refueling Needed: Kazakhstan-Built Chery PHEV Models Complete 700 km Test Drive

Bloggers, media representatives and Chery customers have tested the new Kazakhstan-built Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV and TIGGO 8 PHEV crossovers during the brand’s first large-scale test drive.

Organized by Chery Kazakhstan, part of Astana Motors, the route stretched from Almaty to the famous Singing Dunes in Altyn-Emel National Park.

Led by automotive expert Timur Mustafayev, participants covered nearly 700 kilometers, taking turns behind the wheel to evaluate both models on highways as well as challenging off-road terrain.

Both crossovers are powered by Chery’s fifth-generation Super Hybrid system, combining a specially developed 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor to deliver a total output of up to 279 horsepower. Equipped with a CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the vehicles offer a driving range of up to 1,200 kilometers on a full tank and a fully charged battery. During the test drive, participants completed the entire journey from Almaty to the Singing Dunes and back without refueling.

“Plug-in hybrids have become one of the key trends in today’s automotive market, and Chery has introduced its bestselling TIGGO 7 and TIGGO 8 in an entirely new form,” said automotive expert Timur Mustafayev. “The biggest advantage of the Chery Super Hybrid system is its versatility. For everyday city driving, the electric mode is more than enough, and charging the vehicle is as simple as charging a smartphone overnight. On longer journeys, the system automatically switches to hybrid mode by engaging the gasoline engine. During our test drive, we covered highways and rough terrain, while my average fuel consumption remained below five liters per 100 kilometers. For a large family SUV traveling at 100–120 km/h, that is an impressive result.”

Designed for outdoor adventures, both models feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing the vehicle to function as a mobile power source. With up to 3.3 kW of output, users can power appliances such as coffee machines, portable refrigerators, air fryers and other household devices. Participants put the feature to the test by preparing coffee and food directly at the campsite.

“For me, as a traveler, the greatest advantage of a plug-in hybrid is the freedom it offers,” said travel blogger Vladislav Pritulyak. “You can head out on a long journey, bring along the equipment you need, power it directly from the vehicle and enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort. What impressed me most was the acceleration. The vehicle responds instantly to the accelerator, both when pulling away and overtaking. Even after dozens of kilometers on gravel roads, the suspension handled the terrain exceptionally well.”

The panoramic roof offered spectacular views of Altyn-Emel National Park, while the thoughtfully designed cabin enhanced comfort throughout the trip. Frequently used controls for the audio system, phone calls, the onboard computer and adaptive cruise control are conveniently integrated into the steering wheel, allowing drivers to keep their focus on the road.

“I spent most of the journey as a passenger and made full use of the massage seats—they are a real advantage on long-distance trips,” said blogger Aya Abish. “The cooled storage compartment in the center armrest was equally useful. Keeping drinks and snacks chilled made a noticeable difference in the summer heat.”

The Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV comes with a five-year or 150,000-kilometer warranty, while the TIGGO 8 PHEV is covered for seven years or 200,000 kilometers. In Kazakhstan, the TIGGO 7 PHEV starts from KZT 11.99 million, while the TIGGO 8 PHEV starts from KZT 13.49 million, depending on the trim level. Both models are available through Chery’s nationwide dealer network, which currently includes 25 dealerships.

The Kazakhstan-built Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV and TIGGO 8 PHEV were recently unveiled as the first New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) produced at the Astana Motors Manufacturing Kazakhstan multi-brand plant in Almaty.

The launch of the hybrid lineup marks another milestone in Chery’s development in Kazakhstan. Officially operating in the country since 2021, the brand has become one of Kazakhstan’s five best-selling automotive brands. More than 54,000 Chery vehicles have been sold through the official dealer network, while sales increased by 11% in the first half of 2026.

Chery’s strategy is built around technology, safety and comfort for the whole family. These principles are reflected in the brand’s “For Family, For Champion” philosophy and supported by the Chery Family Care service program, designed to provide comprehensive support for vehicle owners.
